Climate Smart provides training and tools for businesses to measure and profitably reduce their carbon emission. With over 450 organizations trained and 360,000 tones CO2e measured (equivalent to nearly 70,000 cars!), Climate Smart helps organizations reduce their emissions, strengthen their businesses, and take action on something they care about.
The Climate Smart program enables business of all sizes to quantify and reduce their carbon footprint and related energy, fuel, and material costs. The program emphasizes education and long-term commitment to continuous improvement. Through workgroup-based training and industry-leading software, the programs help businesses identify practical changes to business practices that result in real cost and carbon savings.
Businesses that complete the program can display the Climate Smart seal, demonstrating they are taking steps to reduce their environmental impact thus helping to forge a new greener way of doing business.
Climate Smart is proud to work with Albion Farms and Fisheries, who measured their baseline carbon inventory for the 2010 calendar year. Albion Farms and Fisheries is now working to reduce these emissions by using cold water to wash equipment, programming HVAC units to optimize energy efficiency, aligning delivery orders to reduce frequency, routing trucks for optimum fuel efficiency, subsidizing bus passes with Translink, reducing business air travel, reducing internal paper use and working with suppliers to minimize incoming packaging at every location.
In the Haida Gwaii location, Albion Farms and Fisheries is revising refrigeration and ice making operational procedures to reduce energy use, using on demand hot water heating and offering offal to local crab boats and to local farmers as fertilizer. These changes are projected to divert over 3,000 kg of waste sent to the landfill and reduce emissions by over 4 tonnes of CO2e.

Ready to eat products are also stored and packed separately so that there is never any danger of cross-contamination.
Dedicated Albion Quality Control personnel consistently inspect both the product and the facilities to ensure a chain of custody that provides the consumer with “Peace of Mind”. The federal and provincial governments, local health boards and third party auditors contracted by key customers, audit Albion Farms and Fisheries regularly. Audit records demonstrate a stellar record, second to none. By maintaining impeccable facilities and procedures end users can feel good about the Albion product that goes into their bodies.
The Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit association dedicated to effecting the conservation of aquatic life through display and interpretation, education, research, and direct action.
Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise works directly with restaurants and markets, ensuring that they have the most current scientific information regarding seafood and helping them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. The options are highlighted on their menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. The Ocean Wise logo next to a menu item is a guarantee that the item is a good choice for keeping ocean life healthy and abundant for generations to come.
The experience and expertise that our partner SeaChoice and its member organizations bring to protecting the environment and promoting the consumption of sustainable seafood is a valued asset to Albion Farms and Fisheries.
SeaChoice, a national sustainable seafood program, is about solutions for healthy oceans. Formed in 2006, SeaChoice was created to help Canadian businesses and shoppers take an active role in supporting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture at all levels of the seafood supply chain.
SeaChoice supports retailer and seafood supplier partners through the steps of constructing a comprehensive Sustainable Seafood Policy that is consistent with the ‘Common Vision for Environmentally Sustainable Seafood’ as defined by the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions. The Conservation Alliance consists of 16 leading North American conservation organizations, including SeaChoice groups, that partnered in 2008 to work collaboratively on sustainable seafood issues and provide guidance on a ‘Common Vision’ for major buyers and retailers’ sustainable seafood policies.
SeaChoice’s sustainable seafood policy work with businesses includes helping to make the shift to ocean-friendly practices, such as substituting ‘Best Choice’ sustainable seafood for red-listed items as well as improving labelling and transparency. In turn, retailers educate their staff, suppliers and customers as well as engaging in policy reform work.
